Assuming both caps are with a low esr and high ripple ratings. It's also a matter of available space and ergonomics but ofcourse the electric characteristics come first hand.

Also if two caps are in parallel and each cap has a ESR rating of for example miliOhms then the total ESR of those two caps will be divided by the number of caps which is two and the total would then be about 75 miliOhms?

So if one cap has a max rating of 2A then two such caps in parallel would be able to have a max of 4A? If I think correctly about the ESR then apart from other parameters one of the more important ones for low ESR is total plate area of all caps in parallel and how easy the charge can get to distribute across that area?

So theoretically the question whether more caps in parallel equal less ESR is hard because on one side the total are increases and the distribution maybe is more even but on the other side each cap has pins and soldering points etc that adds up more resistancewell i'm not sure.

If they stay charged at the peak AC value rectified all the time the rectifier can'y move any additional charge into the caps nor from them so the ripple should be small and it gets bigger as the load becomes heavier and draws more current from the caps so the rectifier has to start filling the " tops" back up on each cycleam I getting this correctly?

For what we do in radio restorations, these two will do the same job; one has a higher voltage rating than the other. But at V, it's more than sufficient for most applications in old radios.

Larger one is easier to handle and new ones have longer leads; little green fits better in tight spots. I think the green cap is probably ceramic to get a V part that small. It probably changes capacitance a lot with temperature and voltage. The orange one is a film cap and much more stable.

The only non-electrolytic cap with much ripple current in a radio is usually the one across the AC power line that acts as a noise filter.

I am doing homework in trying to figure out the required hold up capacitance in the system but am having issues knowing if I am going to be overloading my capacitors. What I know: I can have as much as 43db of ripple going into the converter which equates 89 V p-p. I would prefer around 31 or so V p-p and using Vicor's calculator that meets the capacitance shown in their data sheets. So I end up with v uf. The units I am seeing on digikey have either a ripple current rating or ESR.

The ones I was considering were a ripple of 3. The one with ESRs only have ripples of around 1. So now what? So it looks like I would need to increases my capacitance to decrease my ripple and would also end up with more paralleled capacitors increasing my ripple abilities. Am I doing this all right?
